Management changes at Salvation Army homeless shelter

The operations manager at The Salvation Army’s Berberian Homeless Shelter and Transitional Living Center near downtown Modesto has resigned.

Capt. Dwaine Breazeal with the Modesto Citadel Corps said Kal Bizek and his wife, Micki, were moving to Washington state to be closer to their adult children. Micki Bizek had served as the army corps assistant in Modesto, which is the equivalent of being a youth pastor.

The army announced in July 2014 that Kal Bizek would serve as the shelter’s operations manager. The Berberian center’s programs include a 100-bed emergency shelter that operates during the winter and year-round transitional living programs.

Breazeal said Berberian center’s staff has assumed Bizek’s duties until a permanent replacement is found.

Breazeal and his wife, Deborah, who also is a Salvation Army captain, are new to Modesto, having replaced Majs. Kyle and Martha Trimmer, whose last day in Modesto was Jan. 31. The Trimmers were reassigned to Oakland to serve as county coordinators, helping The Salvation Army’s Alameda County coordinator. The move was based on health reasons for Kyle Trimmer, who lost the sight in one eye in July and has a detached retina in the other.
