Man ejected from pickup in crash near Patterson

A Newman man suffered major injuries Wednesday morning when he was ejected from his vehicle after a crash northeast of Patterson.

The collision occurred just after 7 a.m. at Monte Vista Avenue and Carpenter Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Chansot Keosinthong, 39, of Modesto, was traveling north on Carpenter in dense fog. The headlights on her Honda Odyssey were not on when she entered the intersection at Monte Vista. North and southbound traffic does not have to stop at the intersection, but west and eastbound traffic on Monte Vista is controlled by a stop sign.

It’s unclear whether 56-year-old Ramiro Diaz, driving west in a Chevrolet pickup, stopped before entering the intersection at the same time as the Honda.

Keosinthong braked in an attempt to avoid hitting the pickup, but the front of her Honda crashed into the front left side of the pickup. The pickup rotated in a clockwise direction, and both left-side doors opened. Diaz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

Diaz suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Keosinthong was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation; it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
