It’s official: Salt-N-Pepa to shake up Stanislaus County Fair
After giving a pretty obvious clue Tuesday on Twitter, the Stanislaus County Fair has spilled the beans – or rather, the seasonings – on another musical act coming this summer.
Hip-hop artists Salt-N-Pepa with DJ Spinderella will perform at the fair on July 11. The fair’s tweet – a photo of salt and pepper shakers.
Rolling Stone called the group the “original spice girls,” and an MTV.com biography says, “As the first all-female rap crew (even their DJs were women) of importance, the group broke down a number of doors for women in hip-hop. They were also one of the first rap artists to cross over into the pop mainstream, laying the groundwork for the music’s widespread acceptance in the early ’90s.”
The trio – Cheryl “Salt” James, Sandra “Pepa” Denton and Deidra “Dee Dee” Roper, aka DJ Spinderella – released several successful albums in the late 1980s and ’90s. The Grammy Award-winning group’s hits include “Push It,” “Shoop,” “Whatta Man” and “Shake Your Thang.”
Its performance in Turlock “will showcase empowerment, while also getting the audience up on their feet singing along to their hits,” said fair spokeswoman Adrenna Alkhas in a news release.
Salt-N-Pepa’s show will be on the Bud Light Variety Free Stage at 8:30 p.m., sponsored by KHOP @ 95.1 and 98.3 KWIN. It’s free with the price of fair admission.
Other acts announced for the fair this year are country group Parmalee on July 12; the Queen of Funk, Chaka Kahn, on July 13; and country singer Dwight Yoakam on July 14.
The Stanislaus County Fair opens July 8 for a 10-day run. Discounted admission tickets, unlimited-ride wristbands and season passes will go on sale April 30. Go to www.stancofair.com for upcoming ticket sale information.
