What: MoSt Poetry Festival

When: Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1528 Oakdale Road

Info: The Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center is sponsoring the fourth annual festival. The guest poets, Troy Jollimore and Heather Altfeld, are professors at California State University, Chico. Both have published prize-winning books of their poetry. The festival will include workshops, readings and the results of the poetry contest, for which the submission deadline is closed. There also will be a luncheon provided for participants. Register online at www.mostpoetry.org or at the door.

What: Parenting the Snapchat Generation

When: Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Downey High School Auditorium, 1000 Coffee Road

Info: The seminar “Parenting the Snapchat Generation,” given by nationally known motivational speaker Jerry Ackerman, will address current student issues, how to get to the heart of your student, various Internet rules to live by, tips to teach by example, and more.

What: Cancer Society jewelry sale

When: Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Great Valley Academy enrollment meetings

Where: Great Valley Academy, 3200 Tully Road

Info: Guest speaker will be Reid Johnson. Discussion will be about how to implement local jurisdiction and constitutionally limited government, and how to protect unalienable rights (aka Five Point Plan for Saving America).

25 YEARS AGO: It was announced from a previous day’s match that the Modesto Junior College men’s basketball team defeated Santa Rosa Junior College 86-74. The Pirates were led by Mike VanderMolen and Chris Guptill, who each had 21 points, while the rest of the team sank a combined 27 of 30 free throws in the second half. The win improved MJC’s record to 12-13 overall and 4-2 for second place in the Camino Norte Conference, just behind Merced College (4-1 CNC).
