Frost greeted many Modesto-area residents on the first day of 2015. The temperature downtown dipped to 33 degrees about 5 a.m. Thursday – not a record (it hit 24 degrees in 1960), but the coldest it’s been on New Year’s Day in 35 years.

The National Weather Service predicted a low of 32 degrees overnight with no rain heading into Friday, with temperatures rising a bit over the next few days.

After frost again Friday morning, the sky should be sunny with a high in the mid-50s and a light wind, the weather service said.
