Modesto police searching for driver who fled fatal crash

Modesto police traffic officers are looking for the driver of a dark-colored sports car they believe was racing with a Ford Mustang that crashed Monday on Sisk Road, killing its driver and a passenger.

Daniel Garcia-Velazquez, 23, of Tracy was driving with passengers Ruben Velazquez Jr., 17, and a 6-year-old girl, both of Salida, north on Sisk Road at high speed Monday afternoon. Velazquez Jr. and the 6-year-old are siblings, and Garcia-Velazquez is their cousin.

Garcia-Velazquez lost control of the Mustang, crashing into a Chevrolet pickup and then a Jeep traveling south on Sisk. The driver of the sports car fled the scene.

Garcia-Velazquez and Velazquez Jr. died at the scene. The 6-year-old girl in the back seat suffered major injuries. She was taken by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she was listed in critical but stable condition Tuesday evening.

Drivers in the other vehicles that were hit by the Mustang suffered minor injuries and were treated at area hospitals.

If you have any information on the crash or the sports car involved, contact Officer Billy Boyle at boyleb@modestopd.com.
