DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday night in Modesto.
The Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit will conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday between 8:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city.
Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough, the department said.
Motorists caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationwide in crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher. Of those deaths, 774 were in California.
Last month, the department’s checkpoints included the night of Nov. 13 at I and Seventh streets and Nov. 14 on the 800 block of Scenic Drive.
That first night, 539 vehicles were screened and five DUI suspects were arrested. Eight drivers were cited or arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, and one driver was arrested on other criminal charges.
The second night, 930 vehicles were screened and one DUI suspect was arrested. Fourteen drivers were cited/arrested on license violations and one was arrested on other criminal charges.
