Salvation Army workers picked up close to 3,000 food and drink items Wednesday that were collected by students and staff at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts on Stoddard Road in north Modesto.

Classes at the school had a friendly food-drive competition, with the winners earning a pizza party. That went to the nine students in Gurnick’s medical-assisting class, who collected 1,100 items.

The academy also has collected baby formula, toothbrushes, clothing and other items it will donate to Haven Women’s Center. Keith Dawson, a Salvation Army employee who helped pick up the donations from Gurnick, said food donations to the charity appear to be up a bit this year over last year.
