More than 50 expert bakers from the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church community in Modesto put in countless hours making thousands of cookies for the church’s two-day Cookie Walk.

A volunteer helps the buyer navigate the tables piled with more than 100 varieties of cookies, from gingerbread to peppermint drops to butterscotch to snickerdoodles.

“I made 75 dozen, another lady made 65 dozen, my son brought up 20 dozen, there are thousands and thousands of cookies here,” said Cookie Walk organizer Louise McCoskey.

She said one woman made six batches because every time she turned around, her grandchildren had snatched some.

The church sells a baker’s dozen of the sweet treats for $7 as part of its Christmas fundraiser.

“We have so many people tell us to charge more for the cookies,” McCoskey said. “But when you work together, you get to know everybody, and that is our main objective, to form a community.”

The cookie boxes are wrapped and labeled so they can be given as gifts or just brought home and gobbled up.

There are vendors at the church selling other handcrafted items, such as necklaces and crocheted beanies, and a corner cafe where people can enjoy their cookies with hot chocolate, tea or coffee.

The Cookie Walk continues Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1528 Oakdale Road, Modesto. Call 209-526-0146 for more information.
