MODESTO

What: Tuolumne River cleanup

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon

Where: Beardbrook Park, near Gateway Park on South Morton Boulevard and 11th Street

Info: Operation 9-2-99 will have a cleanup project along the Tuolumne River. Organizers need a large number of volunteers. Volunteers under the age of 18 need a parent-signed waiver form. For more information or to download the waiver, go to www.tinyurl.com/operation9-2-99.

SONORA

What: Christmas Bird Count

When: Dec. 16, 19 and Jan. 2

Where: Sonora, Groveland, Calaveras County

Info: The Central Sierra Audubon Society will conduct Christmas Bird Counts in Groveland, the Sonora area and Calaveras County this year and is looking for volunteers to help with the counting process. The Groveland area count, on Dec. 16, is being revived after a lapse of several years. The Sonora CBC will be Dec. 19. The Calaveras CBC is on Jan. 2. What: Christmas Soup luncheon

When: Thursday, 11:30 a.m.

Where: Community room of Sonora Hills, 19601 Greenley Road

Info: The Tuolumne County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting and Christmas soup luncheon. A variety of soups will be provided by current officers and members of the board of directors. The local ukulele group, S’more Ukes, will play a medley of holiday songs. “Hollywood’s Heyday in the Hills,” a 12-minute documentary celebrating the many movies made in Tuolumne County, will be shown. The luncheon is free and open to all members and guests. YESTERYEARS

75 YEARS AGO: The second concert of the season for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra featured cellist James Arkatov from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Arkatov featured two selections and was called back for two more by the audience at Modesto High School auditorium. Afterward, the Modesto Symphony played a chorus of “Silent Night,” while the audience sang under the direction of Miss Marjory O’Dell.
