YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: Farm laborers living in Stanislaus County Housing Authority trailers were protesting a doubling of the rent for a new trailer park. The new trailer park would have been close by to the old, in Westley, which was cited for being too “hazardous.” The housing authority voted unanimously to reaffirm that the new rent for the new site would be $20 a month, rather than $10.50 at the old site. Protesters claimed they could not afford the winter housing hike, since many either worked part-time or were unemployed. Many of the laborers were either Mexican citizens or Americans of Mexican descent, and vowed they would have to be evicted before they would pay the $20 a month for rent.
