YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: Before a standing-room-only crowd of 8,500, Merced High School defeated Nevada Union of Grass Valley 21-12 for the state football championship at Modesto Junior College. The Bears completed the season with a perfect 14-0 record and were ranked first in California by Cal-Hi Sports. It was Merced’s second such title in three years and second consecutive victory over the Miners. The Bears lost their first bid for a title in 1988 vs. Davis-Yolo, 33-25.
