YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: A 200-foot tall sugar pine, with a 7-foot diameter, in the Stanislaus National Forest, Pinecrest, was set to have been felled by Mark Patton of Tamarack Tree Service of Mi-Wuk Village. Patton said the tree, nicknamed “Sugar Daddy,” had to come down due to a bark-beetle infestation that was cutting off its ability to direct nutrients up its trunk. Patton estimated that the tree was 400 to 500 years old, putting it as a seedling right around the time of Queen Isabella giving Columbus orders.
