More cold, wet weather on way, forecasters say

The National Weather Service in Sacramento reported Wednesday that another cold, wet system is expected to pass through the foothills and valley Sunday and Monday.

The system should bring mountain snow, with Sierra chain controls and travel delays possible. Valley and foothill drivers are warned that roads will be slick because of rain, and mudslides are possible in recently burned forest areas.

Predicted precipitation levels 0.01 to 0.25 inches for the Modesto area and 0.25 to 0.5 inches for areas from well north of Sonora to Yosemite National Park.

Snow levels could drop below Sierra pass elevations by early Sunday, down to 3,500 feet by late Sunday into early Monday, the weather service forecasts. Four to 8 inches of snow are expected near pass levels, with up to a foot on higher peaks.

“There is still a difference in about six hours in starting time between the different forecast model solutions, so timing is still a bit uncertain,” the weather service said in a news release. “There is low potential for thunderstorms with locally heavy rain Sunday. Heavy rain could impact burn scars and cause ash movement, especially over this year’s burn scars. The exact location and intensity of thunderstorms is uncertain.”
