Ex-Modestan will reach top of Kilimanjaro at 10 p.m. Tuesday
Former Modestan Julian Torres, who lost parts of both legs to an explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, will summit Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The 27-year-old retired Marine sergeant who grew up in Modesto and graduated from Johansen High in 2006, is using his prosthetic legs to make the climb, which began Nov. 3 with plans to plant a flag atop the 19,341-foot mountain on Veterans Day through a non-profit called The Heroes Project. Kilimanjaro is 13 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time.
