YESTERYEARS

40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Modesto City Council voted 6-1 to extend the Sonoma sewer trunk east of Oakdale Road from Briggsmore Avenue to Floyd Avenue, into what was then farmland. The lone dissent vote was by Vice Mayor Phillip E. Newton, who felt the trunk extension should have gone further north to Sylvan Avenue. The vote would have brought 430 acres of orchard into Modesto for subdividing in two years.
