MODESTO

What: The Stanislaus County Spelling Championships

When: Grades 4-6, 5 p.m. Tuesday; grades 7-8, 5 p.m. Nov. 10

Where: Grades 4-6, Gregori High, 3701 Pirrone Road, Modesto; grades 7-8, Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St.

Info: Both events are free, sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education and Dot Foods. The top two spellers in each competition will continue on to state competitions in the spring.

What: Christmas Bazaar

When: Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Where: Central General Baptist Church, 944 N. Central Ave.

Info: The bazaar includes crafts, candy, baked goods, lunch and vendors.


OAKDALE

What: Oakdale Women’s Connection Luncheon

When: Nov. 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Where: Papapolloni Mediterranean Bistro, 1214 West F St.

Info: Annual Sweets and Treats Boutique. Doors open for shopping the silent auction at 11:30 a.m., with a program of lunch and lesson beginning at noon. Lori Hartin shares her “fairytale life,” representatives said in a news release. Cost $18. RSVP to Barbara at 209-847-5605.


MURPHYS

What: Day of the Dead

When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Downtown, community park

Info: Participating businesses and vendors will be offering authentic cultural art, food, sugar skulls, face painting and live music, as well as displaying ofrendas (altars) celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. There will be food available for purchase as well as free live entertainment in the park. Sixth annual event includes a Catrina and Catrin Dress Contest on Saturday afternoon followed by a Candle Light Procession. YESTERYEARS

25 YEARS AGO: Hughson High School Huskies defeated the Central Catholic Raiders 40-7 to earn the school’s first playoff berth since 1973. The win over the Raiders also ended a 17-year winless streak. In the win, the Huskies scored 33 first half points and by the end of the game, had outrun Central Catholic 409 yards to 184.
