About 1,900 Modesto Irrigation District customers in east Modesto lost power Sunday afternoon after a car struck a power pole on Claus Road, according to authorities.

Police said the accident, at approximately 2 p.m., involved one car, whose driver apparently lost control and hit the pole. The driver was taken to the hospital, and his injuries were not considered serious.

Authorities closed Claus Road between Creekwood Drive and Yosemite Boulevard near Johansen High School as MID made repairs. MID spokeswoman Melissa Williams said Sunday evening that crews had to replace at least two power poles.

She said about 1,900 customers initially lost power, and as of 5:30 p.m. all but about 40 had had their power restored. The remaining customers were expected to have their power back by about 7 p.m.
