Success & Service: Brown appoints three Valley residents to posts
Gov. Jerry Brown recently appointed Jane McAllister, 53, of Hilmar and Tom Hallinan, 54, of Ceres to the California Law Revision Commission.
McAllister, a Democrat, became a partner at McAllister and McAllister Inc. in 1996 after being an associate at Damrell, Nelson, Schrimp, Pallios, Pacher and Silva from 1988 to 1996. McAllister earned a Juris Doctor from the Humphreys College School of Law. The position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. McAllister is a Democrat.
Hallinan became a partner at Churchwell, White LLP in 2012 after being a partner at Bush, Ackley, Milich and Hallinan from 1994 to 2012. He served as a law clerk at the U.S. attorney’s office, Eastern District of California, from 1991 to 1993 and at the Judicial Council of California from 1990 to 1992. A Democrat, Hallinan earned a Juris Doctor from the Lincoln Law School of Sacramento.
Brown also appointed Mike Gallo, 64, of Merced to the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley board of directors. Gallo has been co-owner at Joseph Gallo Farms since 1965.
Salvation Army, CovenantCare dancing over donations
Dancing With the Turlock Stars Inc. presented checks of $45,000 each to Turlock’s Salvation Army and CovenantCare Hospice, from funds raised by the charity’s annual dance competition Sept. 19.
Manteca Boys & Girls Club gets $20,000 from Maytag
Robin Taberna, a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manteca and Lathrop, is a 2015 Maytag Dependable Leader Award winner. Taberna teaches karate along with sportsmanship and teamwork to the 5,000 members of the club. The Manteca-Lathrop club will receive $20,000 from Maytag, which will fund four $500 scholarships a year over a decade to qualified members attending college or a technical school.
Arts scholarship benefit set
The Wendell White Arts Scholarship fundraiser is scheduled for Nov. 8 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Barking Dog Grill in downtown Modesto. It will feature music, stories and memories, with a portion of food sales going toward the scholarship fund. The event will include a silent auction and organizers are seeking donations of items. Wendell White was a local musician who died in January 2014. Last year’s inaugural event generated $2,500 in scholarships. Email Ken White at KenWhite@kw209.com.
