What: CITY MINISTRY NETWORK CATALYST

What: HPV AWARENESS EVENT

When: Thursday, 6 p.m.

Where: Davis High School little theater, 1200 W. Rumble Road

Info: “The Jakshi Project,” an HPV awareness event, will feature presentations by a physician and cervical cancer survivor, including information regarding HPV and its effects. Spanish translation will be available. Following the presentation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccinations for Children program will provide free HPV vaccinations for young men and women under 19 years of age who meet one of the following qualifications: Medicaid-eligible; uninsured; Alaska native; or American Indian. Attendees under 18 must have a parent/guardian present to receive a vaccination. Students from the Grace M. Davis Health Careers Academy will provide free, basic vital checkups. The American Cancer Society will hand out informational brochures.

What: FOSTER OR ADOPTIVE PARENT ORIENTATION

When: Thursday, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Where: Sierra Vista Child and Family Services, 101 Park Ave.

Info: Sierra Vista Child and Family Services is holding a free orientation class for those interested in learning more about becoming a foster or adoptive parent. For more information, call Vance Kelley at (209) 491-0872.

What: SCIENCE PRESENTATION

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Modesto Junior College West Campus, Sierra Hall 132, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.

Info: The Modesto Area Partners in Science will offer a presentation titled “Modeling Modesto’s Groundwater,” by Steven Phillips, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He will discuss a new groundwater and surface-water model of the Modesto region. The event is free and open to the public. Keyes

What: CANDY CANE MICE CRAFT

When: Wednesday, 1 p.m.

Where: Keyes branch of the Stanislaus County Library, 4420 Maud Ave.

Info: Children are invited to come to the library and enjoy a candy cane mice craft. Participants will have the opportunity to make a Christmas mouse out of felt, and each mouse will hold a festive candy cane. For more information, call the Keyes library at (209) 664-8006.

100 YEARS AGO: Playing at the State Theatre were “The Dancer,” a two-act Kalem featuring the premier danseuse Mademoiselle Verns Merereau; “The Girl at the Lock,” a two-act Lubin; “Posie’s Legacy,” a vitagraph; and “The Tattered Duke,” a comedy reel. Admission to the theater was 5 or 10 cents.
