After a dry holiday, rain will move into Modesto

Another wet weather system is set to move into the area this weekend, and forecasters say this one has the potential to pack some punch.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement, predicting rain in the Northern San Joaquin Valley as early as Friday night.

First, however, the Thanksgiving holiday looks to be sunny, with some areas of patchy fog. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 60s for the next couple of days, with overnight lows dropping to about 45.

The clouds move in Friday evening, with a slight chance of rain that night growing more likely into Saturday. The heaviest rain and snow are expected to fall Sunday into Monday, forecasters say.

The storm could cause some problems with holiday road travel, as falling leaves could clog drains and lead to flooding in some areas. Also, the areas that were burned in wildfires in the last couple of years are susceptible to debris runoff if there’s an abundance of rain.

Still, it’s good news for an area that has been parched by drought for the last few years. And it looks like there’s more on its way: Forecasters say they have “high confidence” of wet weather into early next week.
