Success & Service: Ceres, Manteca teachers honored

Lori Mariano, a first-grade teacher at the Whitmore Charter School of the Arts and Technology in Ceres, was among educators recognized by the American Literacy Corp. with awards for outstanding contributions to literacy. They received their honors in Riverside earlier this month.

The American Literacy Corp. annually recognizes and rewards exceptional California K-8 teachers and certificated reading support personnel who significantly increase the literacy levels of their students.

Mariano and three other teachers, among them Tonya Heath of Manteca Unified School District, each received a $2,000 stipend and a $500 grant to be used for a schoolwide project.

Oakdale schools get sports donation

Oakdale Joint Unified School District received a $1,010 donation last week from Stockton-based World Events Sports. World Events Sports operates a fall and spring NFL Flag Football League and a Winter Jr. Warriors Basketball League for boys and girls ages 4 to 17. Through World Events’ Sports 4 Schools program, a portion of each child’s registration is donated back to that child’s school.

World events director Anthony Grigsby presented the check to Marc Malone, Oakdale schools superintendent. The money will be used to help students take advantage of field trips and provide school supplies. For more information, go to www.worldeventssports.com or call World Events Sports at (209) 888-4904.
