Pedestrian killed trying to cross Highway 99
A Modesto man died Saturday night when a car hit him as he attempted to run across Highway 99.
David Williams, 35, of Modesto was driving a rented Chrysler minivan in the fast lane of northbound Highway 99, north of Hatch Road, when the pedestrian ran toward him from the right shoulder just before 10 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Don Davis.
The pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Michael McGee, was wearing dark clothing and Williams didn’t see him until he was about 30 feet from the car.
Davis said Williams braked and swerved left to avoid hitting McGee, but the right front side of the Chrysler hit him, Davis said.
McGee died at the scene.
Davis said drugs, alcohol or the vehicle’s speed are not suspected to have been factors in the incident.
He asks anyone who might have witnessed the incident to call the CHP at (209) 545-7440.
