Success & Service: Three honored as literacy heroes

Three area residents were honored Friday as literacy heroes as part of the second Great Valley Bookfest during an event at a private residence in Manteca.

The winners were retired Modesto educator Harry Bakker; retired Manteca librarian Ruthanne Bassett; and Jennifer Torres, University of the Pacific’s director of community relations. All were recognized for their efforts to promote literacy in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.

First-time author writes about Rim fire

B.J. Hansen of Sonora, a radio news director, has written “California’s Rim Fire: Behind the Headlines,” touted as the culmination of in-depth interviews with several of the key players that responded to the fire, local government leaders, conservationists and community members that were directly impacted.
