50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that a gust-fed fire started in the Mother Lode the previous day and kept going into the next. The blaze was pushed bv 50-mph winds through brush and timber in Amador County, 4 miles northwest of West Point near the north fork of the Mokelumne River; lept into Calaveras County; and ate another 1,000 acres.
