Farm Beat: Event will benefit county fair, Stanislaus State ag

Two institutions in Turlock that teach farming — the Stanislaus County Fair and California State University, Stanislaus — will benefit from an Oct. 8 event.

The 13th annual Tastes of the Valley will feature wine, cheese and hors d’oeuvres, as well as live and silent auctions. It will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the fairgrounds, 900 N. Broadway.

The proceeds will go to the Agricultural Studies Department at the campus and to the Friends of the Fair Foundation. The $50 tickets can be purchased at www.stancofair.com or at the fairgrounds office.

Food will be provided by the Hilmar Cheese Co. and several other vendors and restaurants. Twenty wineries and several craft breweries will provide drinks.

“Our goal for the Friends of the Fair Foundation is to encourage agriculture education within Stanislaus County,” said Matt Cranford, the fair’s chief executive officer, in the announcement Thursday. “Our partnership with CSUS and the ag department has helped accomplish that goal.”

ELSEWHERE ON THE FARM BEAT: California Women for Agriculture will hold a Farm to Table Dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Turlock Golf & Country Club, 10532 N. Golf Link Road. It will include a “farm fresh” meal and silent auction.

The event will raise money for the Stanislaus County chapter’s legislative and outreach work. Single tickets are $50, and a table for eight with wine is $500. Tickets can be ordered by calling 209-606-1418 or mailing a check to P.O. Box 2005, Turlock 95381.

▪ Farm labor leader Dolores Huerta will be honored at a Sept. 19 dinner and dance in Stockton, where she grew up.

The event, a fundraiser for the Dolores Huerta Foundation, will be from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Stockton Civic Auditorium, 525 N. Center Drive. The tickets – $35 for the dinner and dance, $20 just for dancing – can be ordered at www.doloreshuerta.org.

Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers union with the late Cesar Chavez.
