YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Stanislaus National Forest’s biggest fire of the season, 125 acres along the 2,200-foot canyon wall of the river’s middle fork, was contained. It took 500 men, aided by planes and helicopters. Seven air tankers dropped 25,000 gallons of fire retardant on the fire, while the helicopters maneuvered the firefighters into place to control and put out the blaze.
