Boy drowns at south Modesto home

Authorities reported that a 1-year-old boy drowned Saturday afternoon in a swimming pool at a south Modesto home.

Ceres Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Lillie said firefighters were dispatched at 4:14 p.m. to a home on Aeron Street, which is north of Pecos Avenue and east of South Ninth Street. Lillie said the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area of Modesto and the Ceres department services the area.

Lillie said when firefighters arrived, the boy had been removed from the swimming pool. He said the boy’s mother greeted firefighters at the door with her son in her arms. Lillie said she handed the boy to firefighters, who gave the boy to an American Medical Response ambulance crew. The boy was transported to Doctors Medical Center.

Lillie said the boy was not breathing and had no pulse; emergency workers began lifesaving efforts, but the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The drowning took place at a home in the 800 block of Aeron Street, and a distraught man who identified himself as the boy’s father declined to comment Sunday.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Lt. Marc Nuno said Sunday that sheriff’s officials are investigating the circumstances of the boy’s death. No other details were available, and Nuno did not have the boy’s name. Lillie said medical privacy laws bar him from releasing the name.
