The transit center on Ninth Street in downtown Modesto was closed and the area evacuated Tuesday evening after a suspicious suitcase was left there.

At about 5:30 p.m., the carry-on suitcase was left on one of islands where passengers wait for the buses, according to Modesto Police Lt. Jason Grogan.

The bomb squad came out, X-rayed the suitcase and discovered there was nothing inside.

No one had claimed the suitcase, which is why Modesto Police cordoned off the area and called for the Stanislaus County Sheriff Department’s bomb squad to respond.

Bus pickup was moved to nearby to Eighth and K streets.
