Modesto police investigating high-speed fatal crash on El Vista Avenue

One person was killed and a man was arrested on a possible murder charge following a high-speed crash early Sunday on El Vista Avenue in Modesto, police said.

Shortly before 2 a.m., the two vehicles with solo drivers collided at the intersection of El Vista and Haddon Avenue. The 19-year-old man who was driving a white sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.

A 31-year-old man who was driving the other vehicle fled after the crash but was arrested a short distance away, police said. He was booked in jail on possible charges of murder and driving after his license had been suspended because of a previous DUI conviction, Sgt. Jerry Ramar said.

Because of extensive damage, it was not immediately clear to investigators which direction the vehicles had been traveling before the collision. It appeared one vehicle was struck on the side and speed was a factor, Scott said.

Investigators suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved. The crash remains under investigation.
