Winton man killed when disabled vehicle is struck on Highway 99 in Turlock

A 47-year-old Winton man, who had stepped out of a disabled vehicle on Highway 99 in Turlock early Sunday morning, was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle.

Four other people were injured in the accident south of Fulkerth Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Shortly after 1 a.m., Elisa Gonzalez of Winton was driving a black Cadillac Escalade south on the freeway when its right rear tire blew out. Gonzalez lost control of the vehicle and it became disabled in the middle of the highway, CHP said.

The front passenger got out and was standing near the right front door of the Escalade. The driver of a southbound Dodge Ram pickup approached the Escalade, applied the breaks and tried to avoid the collision. But the pickup struck the Escalade and the 47-year-old man.

The pickup continued on and hit the concrete median wall. The man who was struck by the pickup got up from the pavement, stumbled to the front of the Escalade and fell down, CHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Gonzalez, 41, was seriously injured and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. She was in stable condition Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, Refugio Rios Jr., 70, of Desert Hot Springs, and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to Doctors Medical Center. Also injured was Manuel Gonzalez, 74, of Winton, who was riding in the Cadillac Escalade. A third passenger in that vehicle was not injured.
