Candle-caused fire damages Modesto home

An accidental fire believed to have been caused by candles caused heavy damage to a Modesto home Thursday night and displaced its residents, officials said.

The Modesto Fire Department was dispatched about 9:15 p.m. to Jasper Avenue, west of Carver Road and north of Rumble Road. The first crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-story residence. The two residents had gotten out safely, the department reported on its Facebook page.

The fire started in a bedroom, but information on how far it spread was unavailable. Damage is estimated at $55,000.
