Two killed in accident near Pinecrest

Two people were killed in a single-vehicle accident near Pinecrest Lake Friday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the CHP, the accident was reported on Highway 108 near the Little Sweden snow play area at 12:05 p.m.

A 69-year-old man from Modesto was driving a 2007 Chevrolet sedan west when the car drifted off the right side of the road onto the dirt shoulder. The driver overcorrected, sending the car out of control off the other side of the road and roughly 200 feet down an embankment.

Firefighters who had stopped at a nearby vista point saw the accident and responded immediately, but the driver and a passenger, a 70-year-old woman from Salida, succumbed to their injuries.

The names of those involved in the accident were not released.
