What: BACKPACK AND SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

When: Thursday, 7:30 to 10 a.m.

Where: Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, 4601 Dale Road

Info: Kaiser Permanente is holding a drive-through backpack and school supply collection as part of Operation Backpack. Volunteers will be accepting the items in the traffic circle next to the main entrance to the hospital. For more information, call Edwin Garcia at 916-614-4507.

What: ZOO PARTY

When: Aug. 7, 5:30 p.m.

Where: Applegate Park Zoo, Rossotti Center, 1045 W. 25th St.

Info: A dinner fundraiser is planned to welcome Bugsy, the new baby alpaca at the Applegate Park Zoo. Dinner includes hot dogs, chips, candy and beverages, followed by a viewing of the movie “Emperor’s New Groove.” Participants may bring a blanket or mat to sit on. Bugsy will make a special appearance after the film. $5 donation per ticket. Reservations requested. 40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that former Modesto Police Department watch commander Lt. David Sundy had been named the new police chief for the Oakdale Police Department. Then city administrator Warren Spacy said the 16-year veteran of the MPD would assume the office Aug. 11, with a starting salary of $1,602 a month.
