Modesto mission needs fast donations for annual back-to-school giveaway
Without more donations – and fast – from the community, need likely will double the supply at Modesto Gospel Mission’s annual Back 2 School Block Party giveaway on Saturday.
For the past six years, the mission has given away new backpacks and school supplies to youths in the city as they prepare for school to begin. But donations are down by half this season.
“So far this year we have less than 600 backpacks. Last year we gave away about 1,200,” Modesto Gospel Mission Director of Development Anastasia Carroll said in an email. “I suspect that because so many people are giving out backpacks that they are being diluted to other organizations.”
Carroll said the mission hopes more people will answer the need with last-minute donations of new backpacks, school supplies or money to buy more supplies before the event on Saturday. People can take donations through 5 p.m. Friday to the Modesto Gospel Mission, 1400 Yosemite Ave.
We had so many (donations) last year and all of a sudden, we’re really down.

For six years, the mission has held the community Back 2 School Block Party, handing out free packs and supplies on a first come, first served basis. Children receive new backpacks filled with paper, sharpeners, pencils, crayons, binders, rulers and scissors. Shoes also will be given out this year.
About 140 volunteers are lined up to work the event Saturday, with free hot dogs and chips for families along with other activities including – new this year – live entertainment.
“It’s always very well attended,” Carroll said. “Children have a great time getting their supplies, face paint, food, ice cream, balloons, etc. They love the carnival atmosphere.”
As in past years, children also will be given free haircuts on site to help get them ready for the new school year, which begins the week of Aug. 10 for many in the Modesto region.
The Gospel Mission has partnered with Umpqua Bank to give away ice cream; Big Valley Grace Church has donated 700 pairs of shoes to give out, as well as money for school supplies; Frito-Lay, Sysco and Flowers Baking Company have helped provide food; and Royal Parties princesses will entertain the kids in line. Several other local organizations, churches and businesses also have contributed, Carroll said.
The backpack giveaway begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gospel Mission.
