The southbound lanes of Claus Road between Briggsmore and Orangeburg avenues were shut down for several hours Saturday as Modesto police officers attempted to negotiate with a woman holding a knife to herself.

Police were at the scene outside Doctors Behavioral Health Center, 1505 Claus Road, for nearly six hours before the standoff was over, officers reported.

According to police, the woman was seen at 9:55 a.m. Saturday waving a knife in the air as she stood on the lawn outside the center – an adult inpatient psychiatric treatment facility. Staff at the center called police.

The standoff ended at 3:45 p.m. and the woman was taken for medical evaluation, according to Modesto police Sgt. Derrick Tyler.
