YESTERYEARS

50 YEARS AGO: There were nine fires in the Stanislaus National Forest from the previous day, all caused by lightning strikes. Fifty-five firefighters were called into the three forest districts to battle the spark-ups: Groveland, MiWuk and Calaveras. Rain fell at the 4,000-foot elevation, but in Groveland, the fire hazard was still as high.
