What: PICNIC AND A MOVIE

What: LITERACY CENTER VOLUNTEERS
When: Thursday, 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: LearningQuest Literacy Center, 1032 11th St.
Info: LearningQuest – Stanislaus Literacy Center is seeking volunteers to tutor adults who need improved reading, writing, math and English skills. Orientation will be held Thursday evening with a training event on Saturday. For more information or to register to attend, call 209-558-4505.

Turlock
What: “AS SEEN ON PINTEREST” CRAFT PROGRAM

Where: Turlock branch of the Stanislaus County Library, 550 Minaret Ave.
Info: The “As seen on Pinterest” program this month will feature a craft focusing on the art of glass etching. Program is recommended for ages 14 and older. Registration required. For more information or to register to attend, call the Turlock library at 209-664-8100.
Merced
What: COOKING MATTERS CLASS
When: July 21, 23, 28 and 30; 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Where: Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St.
Info: The Merced Recreation and Merced County Public Health departments will be offering a session of “Cooking Matters,” which will focus on preparing healthy and simple snacks and meals that kids can make at home on their own. The class is open to kids going into 7th, 8th and 9th grades. The class is free and space is limited. Call 209-385-6298 to reserve a spot.

YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that in less than a year’s time, the Modesto Junior College gymnasium – built in 1930 for $25,568 by Ernest Green with wood framing and stucco coating – would be replaced by a modern gymnasium made of steel and concrete, constructed by C.S. Plumb Co. of Stockton for $1,862,000.
