Two apparent drownings reported over weekend

Authorities said a 50-year-old Patterson man appeared to have drowned Sunday in the Delta Mendota Canal, and a 26-year-old Fullerton man might have drowned Saturday in Don Pedro Reservoir.

The body of the Patterson man was recovered from the canal about a quarter-mile south of the Sperry Avenue bridge. Lt. Marc Nuno of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said there were no bruises or other marks that would indicate foul play. Authorities were trying to notify next of kin.

The man, whose name was not released, was the owner of a car that was parked on the canal bank at the gate near Sperry, Nuno said. One of the car doors was open and the keys were in the gray sedan.

People reported seeing the body in the canal about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Rescue units were initially dispatched, and then divers were called to recover the body.

On Saturday, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a boater near Fleming Meadows that a member of the boater’s party had been swimming and failed to resurface.

Rangers and personnel from the sheriff’s boating enforcement unit responded and searched for the man. A dive team and other personnel with sonar equipment located a body about 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

The victim has not been identified. Foul play is not suspected.
