YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that 30 random cracks in the concrete surface of Highway 99 had prevented a 5.9 mile stretch through Modesto from opening on time. The cracks and chips in the curbing had to be filled before the state would accept the work, said William Zapp, project superintendent for Matich Constructors. The patching of the road had stalled as the cement masons walked off, joining plasterers, because the group’s working agreement with the Associated General Contractors had expired two weeks prior.
