What: DRIVER SAFETY FOR SENIORS

When: Monday-Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Where: Doctors Medical Center, Conference Center, 1441 Florida Ave.

Info: Students of a AARP Senior Driver Safety class will receive a certificate to obtain an automobile insurance discount. The fee for the eight-hour course is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members. For more information or to register to attend, call (888) 284-6641.

What: PEACE CAMP

When: June 26-28

Where: Camp Peaceful Pines, Clark Fork Road, 6.7 miles off Highway 108

Info: The Modesto Peace/Life Center’s 33rd annual Peace Camp in the Sierra will include a workshop on “Meeting Challenges through Vulnerability and Compassion to Effect Change: Embodying Peace to Create a Peaceful World,” led by Lori Wong, a Stanford-certified Compassion Cultivation Training teacher. A workshop on environmental justice will be facilitated by Guadalupe Martinez. Scott Gifford will bring Appalachian dulcimers and ukuleles for campfire sing-alongs. Nature hikes, star walks. Camp fee is $85 for adults; $65 for 18 and under, 3 and under are free. Camp fee covers program, food and lodging. For more information, call Ken Schroeder at (209) 480-4576.

50 YEARS AGO: The Stanislaus County Planning Commission upheld a previous decision opposing service station signs higher than 35 feet along Highway 99. Despite being overruled by the Board of Supervisors twice on signs for Shell Oil Company, the commission voted unanimously to deny Standard Oil Company’s request to erect a 43½-foot sign next to a Shell station, which had received approval by the board for its 43½-foot sign on appeal.
