YESTERYEARS

40 YEARS AGO: The Modesto City Council approved an adjusted 1975-76 budget of $32.6 million, which swelled with a 12.5 percent wage increase for firefighters and a 10.5 percent boost for all other employees, including police. Additionally, cost-of-living hikes were given in multiyear employee contracts that would end at the end of the year; the hikes were to be based on the consumer price index plus 2 percent for fire safety personnel.
