25 YEARS AGO: The Stanislaus Audubon Society sued Stanislaus County over the approval of a 27-acre golf course on the Willms Ranch near Knights Ferry without first conducting a full environmental study. The case went all the way to the 5th District Court of Appeal, which ruled in favor of the Stanislaus Audubon Society. The appellate court’s decision said the proposed golf and country club might have had a significant adverse effect on the surrounding area -- including the prospect of attracting housing development.
