50 YEARS AGO: After months of denying access to their properties along the Tuolumne River below La Grange, 10 property owners offered river access from their properties to the Modesto and Turlock Irrigation Districts. The access was needed so that Turlock, Modesto and the city of San Francisco could obtain rocks for the construction of the Don Pedro Dam, for which San Francisco was paying 51 percent of the total cost. In return, the owners would get cleaned up frontages to their properties and the gravel that the salmon used to spawn would also be maintained.
