What: American GI Forum Fundraising Dinner

Info: The American GI Forum, a nonprofit Latino veterans advocacy group, invites the community to its fundraising dinner. The dinner will feature chicken enchilada, beans, rice and dessert. Cost is $10. Proceeds go to fund AGIF’s advocacy, outreach and scholarship programs. Call 209-765-7356.

What: Community Engagement Forum

When: Wednesday, March 4, 6-7:30 p.m.

Where: Thomas Downey High School, 1000 Coffee Road

Info: Modesto City Schools retained Jason Okonofua, PhD, UC Berkeley Professor and expert in social psychology, to study their discipline policies and make recommendations.At the forum, Okonofua will report his recommendations based on his study findings. Info: The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Yosemite chapter, invites the public to its next lunch meeting. What: Income Tax Preparation Assistance

When: Thursdays, 4-7:30 p.m.

Where: Oakdale Library, 151 S. First Ave.

Info: Free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs will be offered through the last week in March at various Stanislaus County libraries. Volunteers, trained and certified by the IRS, will provide tax preparation assistance. Interested parties are encouraged to make an appointment; walk-ins may be helped if time permits. Taxpayers must bring ID and Social Security cards for each person who will be on their tax return and the prior year’s tax return, if available. 25 YEARS AGO: Modesto Junior College speech team competed in the Northern California forensics tournament, hosted by California State University, Chico. MJC outperformed 13 other community colleges to capture top honors; they also outscored upper-division rivals from 11 universities, to capture second place overall at the Northern California Forensic Association tournament. Team president Tai Bogan captured a first-place award with his seven-minute extemporaneous speech on House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
