40 YEARS AGO: It was reported that a National Guard Chinook Helicopter was used to aid first responders in Patterson after a section of the levee-like creek bank of Salado Creek failed. The National Guard dropped a junk car and sandbags to shore up the break. It took two days for the fire department, police and public works to bring the creek back into its banks, but not before residents of the Cochran-Mayner subdivision had their basements flood. California at this point had faced six days of continuous storms.
