75 YEARS AGO: The US War Department released information on a July 13, 1944, clash between Army Paratroopers and a Japanese machine gun battery where Turlock Sgt. Herbert A. Thomas was able to stop the battery from continuing to fire on his platoon so it could advance on the position. On the island of Noemfoor, in Dutch New Guinea, Sgt. Thomas and seven others were ordered to flank the battery. Though losing six members of his squad, 14 Japanese fighters were mortally wounded and the remainder abandoned their position, allowing for the platoon’s advancement.
