50 YEARS AGO: The Stanislaus County Civil Grand Jury recommended that plain clothes detectives in the sheriff's office be outfitted with automatic pistols. This recommendation came after a fight ensued at a bank in Hughson on Jan. 27, 1970, where robbers mortally wounded a detective. He and his partner only had six-shot snub-nosed revolvers against the robbers automatic pistols. A 24-hour manhunt in three counties netted the two robbers, one mortally wounded and the other wounded and captured.
