Info: The Stanislaus County Library Modesto Branch, along with the Friends of the Modesto Library, will host an event in remembrance of author Jane Austen, “All Things Jane.” The event will include a discussion of Jane Austen’s works and a special preview of Opera Modesto’s Story Into Song January production of “Mansfield Park.” The event is free, but space is limited. What: Strength Training Class for Older Adults

Info: The Healthy Aging and Association will offer free strength training classes for older adults, ages 60 and over. The Young at Heart Strength Training classes work on strength, balance and flexibility to help reduce the risk of falling and to help participants maintain their independence. Info: The Yosemite Gateway Partners quarterly meeting will feature an advance screening of the documentary on the Southern Sierra Miwuk Tribe's effort to achieve Federal Acknowledgment of their sovereignty, during the morning session. 40 YEARS AGO: It was reported that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency praised the City of Modesto’s efforts to protect farmland. The EPA pointed out that if the measures that Modesto had taken up were used in other cities, that those cities would have saved 5.6 million acres of land nationwide over the next 20 years. The agency endorsed population control measures the city had in place and were studying with Stanislaus County.
