What: RIVER CLEANUP
When: Saturday, 8 to 11 a.m.
Where: Tuolumne River, Ninth Street Bridge and River Road
Info: Operation 9-2-99 is holding a river cleanup event. Participants should bring sturdy shoes, gloves, hats, layered clothing for weather, and a refillable water container. A liability form is required for all participants; minors will require one signed by a parent or guardian. What: COMMUNITY HYMN SING

Where: Modesto Christian School, J Building, 5901 Sisk Road
Info: The public is invited to participate in a Hymn Sing which will include hymns, gospel songs and choruses of several decades past. The event is open to the public.
What: SECOND SATURDAY MUSEUM PROGRAM
When: Saturday, 2 to 3 p.m.
Where: McHenry Museum, 1402 I St.

What: COPS AND DOGS EVENT
When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Berry Grove Park, Calcagno Street and Linden Drive
Info: The Ceres Police Department is hosting Cops and Dogs, providing the community with the opportunity to enjoy hot dogs with the police department, interact with SWAT personnel, view public safety vehicles and watch K-9 demonstrations. There will also be children’s activities.
Oakdale
What: BUNKO NITE
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Oakdale Grange Hall, 30 Lambuth Ave.

YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that Nasco Inc., an Atkinson, Wis.-based mail order distributor of agricultural supplies and other items, chose the Modesto market to locate its Western headquarters. The company’s 10,000-square-foot building would be built in the Lyng Industrial Tract on Princeton Avenue and leased from the Ed J. Lyng Co.
